Scarce Winchester Model 1873 1st Model Rifle w/ Set Trigger
Description: Serial #14475, .44 WCF (.44-40), 24" octagon barrel with a fair bore that has fairly strong rifling and a few areas of moderate - deap pitting. It may clean up a little better. This is an 1877-made rifle, that has an overall plum-brown patina with some dull gray on the high edges and projections, as well as areas of moderate pitting scattered about the barrel. Magazine, frame, and lever. The correct, unmarked cartridge lifter has an overall yellow-ochre tarnish, and the "thumbprint" dustcover slides loosely. The lever is somewhat bent downwards, and the action hangs up about 2/3 of the way open. You have to manually push the lifter down to close the action. This is probably why the lever is bent. The smooth walnut forend and buttstock have numerous handling marks and bruises throughout. The crescent buttplate has heavy pitting with areas of brown oxidation, and the stock compartment is empty. The set trigger works as it should. The accompanying 2022-dated Cody Firearms Data Sheet specifies that the rifle was received in the warehouse on January 31, 1877, and shipped out on July 11 of the same year. This is an all original example of a very early production Model 1873 Winchester, and would make a great addition to any collection.
