Winchester Model 1873 Rare “Cowboy” Model Made in 1889

It is not often you find an antique Winchester Model 1873 rifle with major amounts of the factory finish, remaining on the wood and metal.  Here we have such a gun, a Winchester Model 1873 rifle, model, in .38 WCF chambering, with the serial number dating it to 1889. Manufactured on special order with 24” barrel length and known as the “Cowboy” version or the gun that won the West. Here is the back story of the Cowboy Winchester: Complaints poured into Winchester because of the long magazine tube rendered the gun barrel heavy and hard to handle on horse-back. So, Winchester shortened the magazine tube making the gun significantly more balanced and easier to control when riding or herding cattle. These were manufactured by Winchester and sold as "special order items". The .38 CF cartridge pairing was known to be very accurate and was popular for both game and protection in the wild areas of the country, still being developed in 1889.  The traveler or cowboy could have one bag of cartridges to feed his handgun and his rifle, making things easier in an era where there were no stores or towns.  The mechanics are superb and the screws are all in excellent shape. The wood has a few light handling marks but is in overall, excellent shape, with no cracks or repairs and the wood-to-metal fit is perfect and tight all the way around. The dust cover is still intact, and it comes with an original 1800’s Western era sling. The bore is very good with deep rifling.  It would be hard to find a better example of an antique Model 1873 at the price point we are offering.  Being an antique this will require no ATF paperwork for the transaction.
