WONDERFUL CASED ENGRAVED MODEL 1873 SPECIAL ORDER EXHIBITION RIFLE
Description: Cal 44-40. This rifle was made for the Paris Exhibition in 1889. It was recently found in South America along with a similar looking gun. That one was an 1886 model with the same style engraving and the same style casing. They were found by a well known Argentina dealer; Hans Schemke. Gun comes complete with Factory Letter noting all the special order features as well as a Letter done by the late R.L. Wilson that details the features, case and accoutrements. This gun was issued the Gran Prix medal at the Paris exhibition and was the only one awarded to an American Arms maker. This medal is included as well some loading tools, cleaning rod, bore light and screwdriver. A sensational gun. Factory letter states that it is a 44-40, full round bbl, button mag, pistol grip deluxe, case hardened and engraved in $4 engraving. It was shipped the same date just before the exhibition and later returned from Paris. From there it must have went to South America because that is where it was recently found. Gun is in great condition with bright vivid original blue remaining on the bbl. Receiver is case hardened that is bright and shiny with slight toning. Engraved on one side is an elk and on the other is a dog. Typical English style engraving but not typical for Winchester. Action is as tight as new. This gun is in 189k range as were all the guns shipped over for the Paris Exhibition. There is a list of about 60 of them and they were all in that range. Some were shipped back, some were sold and some just disappeared. This is a great gun and is cased in a canvas and leather English style case with compartments. Case has been relined and is still in VG condition. A historically significant firearm. One of the best 73's I have had!
