1885 HIGHWALL .38-55, OCTAGON RIFLE, #49XXX, MADE 1891
Description:
1885 HIGHWALL .38-55, OCTAGON RIFLE, #49XXX, MADE 1891. An attractive example that shows good aged blue on the 30” medium heavy No.3 barrel with excellent Winchester markings. It is fitted with an original buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and a replacement blade/bead front sight. The receiver is an aged mottled dark patina that has not been cleaned. It is also fitted with a single set trigger that is complete with the adjustment screw. The trigger works fine, but the set portion needs an adjustment to hold. The stock and forend show normal handling with tight wood to metal fit and the forend has the original ebony wedge inlay in the tip. Action is very tight and the safety half-cock on the hammer is not holding- This and the set trigger adjustment should be an easy fix. The upper tang is fitted with a mid-range elevation adjustable vernier sight. The bore is a little dark with strong rifling all the way through. I ran some oil patches through and they came out full of gunk. Looks like there is some light scattered corrosion mainly in the grooves which leads me to think most of it may be leading that should brush out better. As is, the bore is decent. Overall, a 135 year-old honest example with a lot of life left in it!
