Description: Antique WINCHESTER Model 1885 LOW WALL Single Shot Rifle .25-20 Single Shot 1891 mfr. Single Shot Rifle Octagonal Barrel Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1885 Low Wall Rifle in .25-20 Single Shot (SS), made in 1891 in New Haven, Connecticut. .25-20 Single Shot was conceived in 1882 by J. Francis Rabbeth and was adopted as a smallbore cartridge for target and varminting applications. Being an early centerfire cartridge, it was reloadable and possibly one of the first cartridges to be “wildcatted”. The top of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.”. The rear of the barrel is marked “25-20 S.S.”. The underside of the barrel is marked “1” for the barrel weight. The overall condition is good. Dark, original patina. The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition but certainly shows it has been shot a good amount: bore is clean with decent but eroded rifling. The walnut stock shows use and remains solid.
