c1887 Antique WINCHESTER Model 1885 HIGH WALL .38-55 WCF Rifle SET TRIGGER
“Best Single Shot Rifle Ever Produced”-Ned Roberts
Description: c1887 Antique WINCHESTER Model 1885 HIGH WALL .38-55 WCF Rifle SET TRIGGER “Best Single Shot Rifle Ever Produced”-Ned Roberts Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Rifle chambered in .38-55 Winchester Center Fire, made circa 1887 in New Haven, Connecticut. The Winchester Model 1885 has a falling-block action, and two models were produced, the Low Wall and the High Wall. Ironically, this was Winchester’s first single shot rifle, the company having been founded on its winning lever action repeater design. John Moses Browning, the famed gun designer who forever changed the firearms landscape, began his career with this rifle in the 19th Century before dominating the world scene in the 20th Century. It was produced principally to satisfy the demands of the growing sport of long-range “Match Shooting”, which opened at Creedmoor, New York, on June 21, 1872. Target/Match shooting was extremely popular in the United States from about 1871 until about 1917, enjoying a status similar to golf today, and the Winchester company, which had built its reputation on repeating firearms, had in 1885 challenged the single-shot giants of Sharps, Remington, Stevens, Maynard, and Ballard, not only entering the competition, but excelling at it, with Major Ned H. Roberts (inventor of the .257 Roberts cartridge) describing the Model 1885 Single Shot as “the most reliable, strongest, and altogether best single shot rifle ever produced.” This specimen is chambered for the high powered .38-55 WCF cartridge. It features a 30-inch octagon barrel and a globe front sight with a Marble’s rear peep mounted to the tang. The trigger is of the single set variety. The overall condition is fine. This example is professionally restored with a new heavier octagonal barrel in blue with vibrantly case colored receiver, lever, and butt plate. Excellent action. Shiny bright bore with strong rifling, virtually new. Solid, smooth stock with a minor and subtle repair along the grain to the forearm on the right side as it abuts the receiver. Markings are sharp. This is a fantastic piece, given a new lease on life! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 30 inches. Caliber: .38-55 Winchester Center Fire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
