H. M. Pope 1885 Winchester High Wall Deluxe Single Shot Target Rifle Heavy No. 4 Barrel Pistol Grip Double Set Triggers ANTIQUE 1896
Description: Very Rare H. M. Pope Model 1885 Winchester Deluxe High Wall Single-Shot Target Rifle with Heavy No. 4 Barrel & Double Set Triggers, .32-40 WCF, mfg. 1896. This is a very special factory double set trigger deluxe High Wall which was customized by legendary gunsmith and barrel maker Harry M. Pope in 1915. It was purchased privately from an old estate here in Connecticut and has never been publicly offered before. Winchester factory records confirm the rifle's original configuration as; Rifle, .32/40, Barrel type octagon, Barrel weight #4, Barrel length 30", Set trigger, Plain pistol grip stock, Mid-range Vernier & Wind gauge sights (no level), shipped June 13th 1896, return and repair December 29th, 1906. The rifle is additionally fitted with a cheekpiece and Swiss butt. Pope modified the gun in 1915 and stamped his serial number “472” under the factory original Winchester barrel. Pope revised the rifling and fitted the muzzle for a ball starter to utilize his popular muzzle-seating technique for improved accuracy. Original heavy No. 4 octagon barrel measures 30" long and 1 1/8" across the flats at the breech tapering just slightly at the muzzle. Crisp original Winchester address and caliber marking with “H.M.POPE” stamped on the top flat. The bottom flat is stamped “4” just ahead of the forearm and under the forearm is marked “472 / 18.5 / 15 / 11 5 / 7/14/15 / H.M.POPE / 4”. Winchester serial number “75260” marked on lower tang. Original Mid-range Vernier tang sight, rear sight blank, and No. 69A Wind Gauge front sight base. The sight itself is missing. The barrel retains 85% bright original bluing with sharp edges and smooth surfaces. Frame, lever, and breechblock retain approximately 70% vivid case color with some fine old dried oil freckling. The stock has a wonderful untouched thick patina with a lovely dark plum/cherry color. The cheekpiece is undoubtedly factory fitted and the forearm has been notched for a palm rest. Aside from an old thin 2 ½" long chip on the right edge of the forearm the stock is excellent overall with no further damage or repairs. Original ebony forend tip and hard rubber Winchester pistol grip cap. Nickel plated brass Swiss buttplate was either installed by the factory or Pope. Action is crisp and functions perfectly. Lever securely drops the breechblock and snaps shut flawlessly without any play or slop. The rear set trigger needs adjustment to function properly but the adjustment screw seems to be stuck and I don't want to force it. I'm sure some soaking will free it up and a turn or two will bring the set trigger back into play. As it sits the action fires perfectly off the front primary trigger. Original cartridge extractor works perfectly. Outstanding mirror bright shiny bore with sharp eight-groove left hand twist rifling. Rifle weighs 11 lbs 13 oz. Winchester factory letter included. Pictures don't do this gun justice, it has a lot of condition and a fantastic untouched original appearance throughout. A highly desirable genuine H. M. Pope Winchester High Wall with some very rare features! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique arms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
