1886 .45-70 LIGHT WEIGHT TAKEDOWN RIFLE, #135XXX, MADE 1904.
Description: 1886 .45-70 LIGHT WEIGHT TAKEDOWN RIFLE, #135XXX, MADE 1904. An interesting rifle because the manufacture date by serial number puts it at 1904, yet it has typical Winchester proof marks on the receiver and barrel that weren’t standard until 1905. It’s possible this was a late 1904 manufactured receiver that wasn’t shipped/proofed until 1905 or it may have been returned after 1905 for repairs at which point it would have been proof marked before returning the rifle. Either way, it is also unusual because it has a crescent rifle butt stock instead of the shotgun butt plate usually found on this model, although crescent butt plates were frequently ordered and provided on this model. I called the Cody Museum on this one, but the serial number puts it in a small group where the records are not available. This example shows mostly gray/brown on the receiver with some blue remaining mainly on the rear portion of the left side and some toward the middle. The right side shows some light blue around the loading gate. Screw heads are generally excellent and the bolt retains exc. deep blue. The correct 22” barrel blue is mostly intact showing some age and a tinge of plum. Exc. markings, original sights, short mag. Tube shows fine blue. Stock and forearm show normal light handling. Tight takedown, strong hammer spring and solid safety half-cock. Bore is bright and excellent. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Rifle Caliber: .45-70 Government Manufacturer: WINCHESTER Model: 1886 TAKEDOWN Serial Number: 135XXX Barrel Length: 22 Condition: FINE Bore Condition: EXCELLENT |
