ONE OF THE FIRST 1886 .45-70 EXTRA LIGHTWEIGHT RIFLES
#113XXX WAS APPLIED ON SEPTEMBER 18, 1897
Description: EARLY, ONE-OF-THE-FIRST 1886 .45-70 EXTRA LIGHTWEIGHT RIFLES TO BE MADE! SERIAL NUMBER 113XXX WAS APPLIED ON SEPTEMBER 18, 1897. The factory “call-in” sheet on this one confirms, “Rifle, .45-70, 22” barrel, ½ magazine, 4 cartridges, Shotgun butt, Rubber plate, Received in the warehouse/shipped September 20, 1897.” The Extra Lightweight model 1886 in .45-70 was first introduced sometime in 1896. This is the earliest example I’ve encountered as most seem to be serial numbered after 1900. This one shows good barrel blue with light thinning and excellent markings with small Lyman blade/bead front sight and buckhorn rear sight. Bore is excellent, bright and sharp! Receiver shows good blue in the front and back portions of the sides with gray mixing in the med sections- the left side shows some evidence of light rust in the middle that was wiped off at some point- minor, but worth mentioning. Still good blue on the bolt and upper tang. Forend cap still retains about two-thirds of the deep blue. Exc. forend and butt stock with correct excellent Winchester embossed hard rubber butt plate. Shows some good case color on the upper portion of the lever on the left side. Exc. screws. These are almost never found with antique, Pre-1899 serial numbers. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1886 EXTRA LIGHTWEIGHT Serial Number: 113XXX Caliber Info: .45-70 Condition: FINE+ Barrels: 22 |
