SPECIAL ORDER 1886 SADDLE RING CARBINE IN .45-70 CALIBER, #144XXX, SHIPPED 1907
Description: SPECIAL ORDER 1886 SADDLE RING CARBINE IN .45-70 CALIBER, #144XXX, SHIPPED 1907. This is a very unusual carbine as it was special ordered with 1/2 magazine and shotgun butt. I called this one in to the Cody Firearms Records Office myself and verified the configuration of this carbine. The letter also verifies this one is a carbine, .45-70, 1/2 Mag and Shotgun butt having been received in the warehouse October 12, 1907 and shipped October 15, 1907. This is unusual as by this time Winchester was selling their extra lightweight rifle as standard with 22" barrel, shotgun butt and half magazine. Yet, obviously, someone wanted a "carbine" with barrel band and saddle ring and NOT a lightweight rifle! Often it seems these 1886 carbines are found in .38-56 caliber and this one is in desirable .45-70. The receiver shows good thinning blue in the rear protected portion on the sides, especially around the saddle ring with the balance aged to gray. Excellent deep blue on the bolt and some good blue on the receiver by the hammer sides. Excellent screws, Barrel is an evenly mixing of thinning blue and plum/brown with deeper blue on the short mag. tube. It is fitted with a Lyman tang sight, dovetail filler blank in the barrel and standard carbine front sight base with pinned small blade/bead front sight. Original checkered steel shotgun butt plate. Stock and forearm generally excellent showing only light handling with very tight wood to metal fit, tight action with strong springs and safety notch in the hammer and fairly bright bore with good rifling all the way through and only some light scattered roughness. All 1886 carbines are rare with a special order example in .45-70 especially so. Cody "Call-In Sheet" included. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Rifle Caliber: .45-70 Government Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1886 SADDLE RING CARB. Serial Number: 141XXX Barrel Length: 22 Condition: FINE |
