Winchester Model 1886 in 45-70. Excellent
Description: Fine and untouched example of the highly desirable Model 1886 in 45-70 caliber. S/N 120981 made in 1900. 26" round barrel with full length mag tube. This rifle has a few unique features including the takedown option, and a shotgun style steel buttplate. This buttstock/plate combo was actually much more condusive to proper sight acquisition for most than the far more common lower pitched stock/crescent butt style usually seen. Additionally, the original sight package consists of the rare and valuable Lyman combination front and 6 series folding rear, along with an excellent Lyman folding tang sight. The original bluing is well retained over most, showing only typical light wear with no ugly patina undertones and just a couple of isolated small patches of light pitting/oxidation on the R side of barrel and mag tube. There are faint but present case colors remaining on the hammer, lever, and buttplate. The wood is also quite nice with original finish and no cracks, having never been sanded or refinished. There are some scattered light handling marks along with a bit more notable scratch along the R side comb line, and some discoloration at the buttplate transition due to moisture staining. The bore is VG-Excellent with just a touch of patchy oxidation toward the muzzle end. I would rate at least an 8 out of 10 given its age and by comparison to what is usually encountered. All mechanical functions are tight and crisp and appear to be functioning properly. As expected, not perfect but completely unmolested and one of the better ones you will see offered. Please add $100 for expedited and fully insured shipping from Alaska. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes |
