1890 IN DESIRABLE .22 LONG RIFLE CALIBER, WITH CHECKERED PISTOL GRIP, NICKEL RECEIVER & BUTT PLATE
Description: ONE OF THE VERY FIRST M0DEL 1890s MADE IN DESIRABLE .22 LONG RIFLE CALIBER, WITH CHECKERED PISTOL GRIP AND NICKEL RECEIVER & BUTT PLATE, #608XXX. Depending on the source, this rifle was made serial numbered in 1917 or 1918. According to the detailed book Winchester Slide-Action rifles, Volume I: model 1890 & 1906, the first Model 1890s were ordered to be made in .22 Long Rifle chambering in December of 1917. An order was placed in August 1918 for 3000 rifles so chambered and in July 1919 1109 of them were delivered. This example may have been one of the 3000 in the initial order. This rifle has excellent wood in the grooved forearm. The pistol grip butt stock has the correct Winchester embossed hard rubber grip cap and the checkering is excellent. Overall the butt stock shows light handling only. Assembly numbers on the inside of the tang, stock and butt plate match. The butt plate retains only traces of nickel with the balance gray/brown. The upper and lower tangs show fine nickel with the left side of the receiver showing fine nickel with some freckling mainly around the takedown thumb-screw. The right side shows good nickel with some freckling and peeling in the upper center portion. Barrel blue is fine showing minor age only. The mag tube has flaked to an uncleaned brown. It has the usual factory 1901 patented rear sight with small blade/bead front sight. Mech. is excellent and the bore shows some wear with a few spots of light pitting toward the middle (an indication that it is not a replaced barrel). An important and attractive pistol gripped 1890 in a desirable caliber
