RARE 1892 .44-40 TAKEDOWN, OCT. BARREL, #344XXX, MADE 1906

2) RARE 1892 .44-40 TAKEDOWN, OCT. BARREL, #344XXX, MADE 1906. These .44-40 takdeown rifles are scarce as it seems most takedown 1892s were used by trappers and outdoorsmen who needed a small caliber rifle that would fit in a "pack basket" or canoe etc. so chose .25-20 or .32-20 caliber rifles. Most of the takedown '92s I've seen were in these calibers. In my experience, the .44-40 takedown has to be the least common. This is a nice example with fine deep blue on the barrel and magazine. The receiver has mainly aged to a plum/brown with a little gray mixed in with fine deep blue on the bolt and loading gate. As is typical on special rifles, the wood is a better than standard grade of walnut and is in excellent condition with tight wood to metal fit- small crack that goes nowhere at the upper left corner of the tang/receiver juncture that is hardly worth mentioning. Tight action, strong safety half-cock, receiver screws appear unturned, tight takdeown, traces of case color on the most protected parts of the lever, bore is bright with scattered pitting and good rifling, factory buckhorn rrear sight with elevator bar intact and Winchester blade front sight. A really attractive and scarce 117 year old 1892.
