SPECIAL ORDER 1894 SEMI-DELUXE TAKEDOWN 22" EXTRA LIGHTWEIGHT ROUND BARREL SHORT RIFLE, WITH PISTOL GRIP
Description: SPECIAL ORDER 1894 SEMI-DELUXE TAKEDOWN 22" EXTRA LIGHTWEIGHT ROUND BARREL SHORT RIFLE, WITH PISTOL GRIP AND SHOTGUN BUTT, .30WCF, #122282, WITH FACTORY LETTER, MADE 1901. This very fine condition '94 has a number of very unusual features including the correct one inch shorter forend used on short rifles. The front sight on these extra light rifles had to be on a short ramp as the barrel was too thin at the muzzle to be safely dovetailed. The 1978 dated Buffalo Bill Historical Center letter states that this rifle is "30 caliber, 22" round barrel, plain trigger, takedown, extra light, Lyman front sight, plain pistol grip, shotgun butt. It was received in the warehouse on September 14, 1901 and shipped September 20, 1901." The front sight is a Lyman ivory bead and marked with the Lyman name and 1885 patent date. The rear sight is a later folding Lyman buckhorn , and it is fitted a Lyman tang sight. Condition is excellent with about all the barrel and mag blue remaining with only the slightest of wear. The magazine tube extends about 3 inches which is correct for these extra light rifles as, like the front sight, the barrel is too thin toward the muzzle for a dovetail to be cut for a magazine retaining band. the receiver shows fine blue with a fingernail sized spot just ahead of the loading gate that looks like a spot of rust was wiped off leaving a small gray spot. The balance of the blue shows some light thinning only and some gray on the bottom of the receiver ahead of the lever. Exc. blue on the bolt and some light case color remains on the lever sides and hammer. The butt stock has the correct smooth steel butt plate, is excellent and shows tight wood to metal fit. The butt stock is also slightly better than standard grade walnut, which was typical for special order rifles. This forend is also excellent and the forend cap shows deep blue, screws appear unturned and the bore is excellent and bright. A super rare and unusual 120 year old 1894 in great condition.
