VERY UNUSUAL SPECIAL ORDER 1894 .25-35 FACTORY SHORT RIFLE, #225XXX, MADE 1904
Description: VERY UNUSUAL SPECIAL ORDER 1894 .25-35 FACTORY SHORT RIFLE, #225XXX, MADE 1904. I called the Cody Museum to check the records on this one and got this “call-in” sheet back: “Type: Rifle, Caliber: 25/35, Barrel Type: ½ Octagon, Barrel Length; 24 Inches, Trigger: Plain, Sights: Lyman front and rear, ½ Magazine, Shotgun Butt, Received in warehouse on July 21, 1904, Shipped from warehouse on July 29, 1904.” According to the survey of Model 1894 records there were only 1,661 rifles with 24” barrels (compared to 269,195 standard 26” barrels). Considering the limited number of barrels in this caliber plus the fact that it is a 24” half-octagon configuration along with the half magazine and shotgun butt with special sights might make this a one-of a kind Model 1894! The receiver shows a fairly small amount of blue in the rear portion of the right side plus the loading gate and at least half of the blue on the left side with the balance gray/brown. The barrel shows good blue with some thinning more on the round portion. Lyman marked blade/bead front sight and buckhorn rear with elevator bar. Stock and forearm show some light handling only with good wood to metal fit, smooth steel shotgun butt plate, tight action with strong springs and solid safety half-cock. Bore is excellent but a little dark with sharp rifling all the way through. One of the most unusual and interesting special order 1894s I’ve seen.
