Winchester 1894 38-55 Factory Engraved Deluxe Take-Down Rifle dom 1911 P. Muerrle authenticated
Description:
I am offering up what has been the crown jewel of my modest Winchester collection of the last 55 plus years and having entered my seventh decade it has become time to let things go. This outstanding presentation grade 1894 rifle has ten special order features, including being factory engraved by William Gough, and has been authenticated by Pauline Muerrle (I have letter of such) and is featured in her recently published book on Winchester engraving. The engraving is of the Winchester #9 style. I also have letter from Cody indicating a DOM date of 8-10-1911. Winchester factory records are not available for this rifles serial number range, but of the first 354,000 model 1894 rifles manufactured only one out of every thousand were factory engraved. Special order features of this rifle are: (1) Factory engraving, (2) Silver plating of receiver, take-down extension, and fore-end cap, (3) Take-down, (4) Half-octagon, half-round 26" barrel, (5) Rapid taper 'pencil' style barrel contour, (6) Style 'H' factory checkering, (7) Deluxe 3X walnut, (8) Shotgun buttstock, (9) 1/2 magazine, (10) Lyman #38 receiver sight. While this rifle remains in excellent overall condition, it was actually carried and shows modest wear to the silver plating. The original varnish finish on the buttstock has flaked off in various spots, but it has no cracks, dings, or damage of any kind. The blueing of barrel and mag, tube would rate 98%. The bore is fine with perfect rifling and only modest darkening in the grooves. I would rate it an honest 7 to 8. I have fired this rifle with cast bullets and it is marvelously accurate. It is important to point out that the Lyman receiver sight was installed at time of manufacture as the area under the long arm of the sight was left unengraved(see last photo). Finding a factory engraved deluxe Winchester today outside of a major collection is nearly impossible. I have priced this outstanding example far below what the 'big' dealers are asking for similar pieces - a rare oppotunity. This rifle is C & R eligible.
