Winchester Model 1894 .30WCF -SEMI-DELUXE TAKEDOWN, 1/2 OCTAGON, 9.8/10 BORE, vintage firearms
Description:
General Specs: Winchester, 1908, .30WCF, 7lbs. 10oz., LOP 13 1/16"
Serial Number: 438797
Vintage Firearms is pleased to offer an unusually well-preserved Winchester Model 1894 combining several of the most desirable rifle. Serial number 438797 dated to 1908, is chambered in .30 W.C.F. and configured as a takedown rifle with a 26-inch half-octagon barrel, half magazine, capped pistol-grip stock, factory-style checkering, and a Lyman tang-mounted aperture sight.
Often described by collectors as a “Semi-Deluxe,” this configuration provides much of the visual appeal of a Deluxe rifle without highly figured walnut or the full complement of Deluxe options. The combination of pistol-grip checkered wood, takedown construction, half-octagon barrel, and half magazine is considerably less common than the standard round-barrel, full-magazine rifles ordinarily encountered.
Most importantly, this rifle remains in exceptional original condition. The barrel retains approximately 98% of its factory blue, with sharp markings and a bright bore showing crisp rifling. The receiver retains approximately 95% strong factory blue, while the hammer and lever retain nearly all of their case color. The bolt and loading gate also show excellent original blue, the screws are excellent. Minor age-appropriate handling and finish wear are present, but there is no apparent evidence of refinishing or alterations.
The stock and forend retain nearly all of their original finish, with sharp checkering, sound wood, and only scattered light handling marks. Matching assembly numbers are present on the lower tang, inside the buttstock, and beneath the buttplate, confirming that these individually fitted components have remained together. Because surviving Model 1894 factory records do not extend to this serial number, a Cody factory letter is unavailable; nevertheless, the rifle’s components, finishes, markings, and fit are consistent throughout with a carefully preserved factory-original arm.
Mechanically, the rifle operates properly, locks up securely, and has a crisp trigger. The takedown assembly remains tight, and the superb bore rating 9.75/10 makes this more than a display piece. It is a scarce and attractive variation of one of Winchester’s most important sporting rifles, preserved in a level of condition seldom encountered after well over a century.
