EXTREMELY RARE 1895 SADDLE RING CARBINE IN CALIBER .30 1903, #56XXX, MADE 1906
Description: EXTREMELY RARE 1895 SADDLE RING CARBINE IN CALIBER .30 1903, #56XXX, MADE 1906. The standard caliber for all 1895s (rifles and carbines) was .30-40 Krag. I have seen a number of carbines in .30-06 and a few in .303 British (mostly for export to Canada and Australia), but I don't recall seeing another carbine in .30-03 caliber. George Madis says in his big Winchester book that the .30-03 was replaced with the .30-06 in 1908 and after that date it was a special order chambering. Rob Kassab & Brad Dunbar show in their new book on the 1895 a catalog page by Winchester in 1918 listing the last time the .30-03 was offered. Basically, the .30-03 is the same as the .30-06 except it has a slightly longer neck. Both loaded cartridges are the same overall length and it was/is common practice to fire .30-06 rounds in a .30-03 rifle. It is important to note to people who shoot either of these cartridges to keep the loads less than maximum as the 1895 action is not as strong as a typical modern bolt action. This carbine retains fine lightly aged blue on the barrel with slight muzzle wear mainly on the left side. The receiver is an evenly aged blue-plum mixture of nearly full coverage with edge wear and brighter blue in the protected areas and on the bolt. There is a puzzling pair of holes with filler screws in the upper tang- puzzling because if a tang sight had been mounted there the bolt would have probably hit the sight stem when the lever is lowered and the bolt retracted. Right side of the receiver just below the receiver ring is stamped with a tiny "H.A.M." that was done with a single stamp, like an official inspector marking, and not stamped by individual letters. The meaning is unknown, but might prove interesting with some research. The butt stock and forend are excellent with tight wood to metal fit and fitted with a sling eye in the butt stock and a forward sling eye in the bottom of the barrel band which may be factory as this was the correct way to fit them. The handguard is original and intact with one typical short crack in the rear top portion ahead of the receiver that seems to go nowhere. Correct long ladder military style rear sight. Tight action and excellent bore. Super rare caliber carbine- haven't even seen a photo of one in any Winchester book. Really fine appearance.
