Guns by Sally-always the best for less. We are way proud to offer this fine example of Winchester's high powered lever gun, the model 1895. John Browning answered the call to design a repeating lever action rifle that could fire the latest smokeless cartridges loaded with pointed bullets. Heavy recoil and tubular magazines do not mix, so a box magazine was the solution. The lever also locks, holding the bolt in place until the lever is opened. That paved the way for several new chamberings for Winchester. This one is a 30-40 Krag, .30 Army, or .30 US. In 1899, this round in an 1895 was used to bag a record breaking Rocky Mountain elk, a record that was unsurpassed for over 50 years. The real joy of this rifle is that it is a special order deluxe version, with high grade walnut and checkering. This is verified by a letter from the fine folks at the Cody Museum, dated 1997. Made in the year of our Lord 1899, she looks pretty good for being 126 years old. She was no safe queen, though, and likely put meat on the table. The blue is fairly strong, with some silvering at carry points and near the muzzle. The well figured walnut is also good, with some minor handling marks. The Lyman 21 sight, originally designed for this model, has seen some wear, but still functions well. The action is crisp and light, and the bore of the 28 inch barrel is very good. There just doesn't seem to be many 1895's on the market, and they are well respected and command a high value.
