Description:
FINE CONDITION TAKEDOWN MODEL 55, .30WCF CALIBER RIFLE, #1036XXX, MADE IN THE YEAR OF THE GREAT STOCK MARKET CRASH OF 1929. Introduced in 1924 when the 1894 rifle was discontinued, the Model 55 was short-lived. By 1932 production had pretty much ended as a result of the Great Depression. Only a little over 20,000 of these fine rifles were produced making them quite a bit more scarce than a lot of Winchester collectors realize. The Model 55 is basically a Model 1894 with half magazine, fluted comb shotgun butt and 24" round barrel. It was replaced with the pistol grip Model 64 in 1933 which remained in production into the 1950s. This example has the takedown feature which was standard until 1930. This example shows nearly all the original deep blue on the barrel and short magazine tube. The barrel had the standard flat top buckhorn rear sight with small blade/bead front sight. The receiver shows good blue on the side panels that is thinning toward the front section and on the receiver bottom and receiver/takedown rings. The bolt shows excellent blue as does the loading gate. Correct original serrated steel butt plate. Excellent screw heads appear unturned, tight takedown. Excellent walnut with only normal light handling marks. Tight action and bright sharp excellent bore. A fine 94 year old limited production Winchester.
