Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1883 Hotchkiss Bolt Action Rifle in .45-70 GOVT, manufactured in 1895 in New Haven, Connecticut. The Winchester-Hotchkiss rifle was first conceived by Benjamin B. Hotchkiss in 1875 and by 1877 he had four US patents on the design which was sold to the Winchester company in early 1877. This was Winchester’s first bolt action rifle and their first firearm with a magazine fed from the butt stock. It was marketed for military applications as well as a hunting rifle, but it would not see widespread use in the US military.
This one is an example of a Third Model Musket. The forward portion of the fore stock was shortened, likely for a lighter and more convenient rifle to carry. There are two levers, one on each side of the receiver. The right is a safety and the left is a magazine cutoff. The tang is marked “MODEL OF 1883”. The barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE/ WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN.U.S.” The breech end of the barrel is marked “45-70”. The trigger guard tang bears the patent information.
The overall condition is very good. The receiver still shows some faint case colors. The rest of the steel has a dark gray patina. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock was shortened long ago and remains solid. The bore is near fine with very good rifling. The action is excellent.
