Antique WINCHESTER-HOTCHKISS Bolt Action CARBINE
Description:
Antique WINCHESTER-HOTCHKISS Bolt Action CARBINE
Bolt Action .45-70 GOVT Carbine Made in 1883
Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1883 Hotchkiss Bolt Action Rifle in .45-70 GOVT, manufactured in 1883 in New Haven, Connecticut. The Winchester-Hotchkiss rifle was first conceived by Benjamin B. Hotchkiss in 1875 and by 1877 he had four US patents on the design which was sold to the Winchester company in early 1877. This was Winchester’s first bolt action rifle and their first firearm with a magazine fed from the butt stock. It was marketed for military applications as well as a hunting rifle, but it would not see widespread use in the US military.
This one would likely have been used by a militia or privately purchased. It was a quite modern firearm for the time, a big-bore, bolt action saddle ring carbine. It is an example of a Second Model Carbine with the magazine cutoff on the right side. The barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE/ WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN.U.S.” The top of the comb is marked “12”, possibly a rack number.
The overall condition is good to very good. 75% of the original blue finish remains. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is fair. It has been repaired just below the receiver, extending from the saddle ring on the left side, across the wrist to the magazine cutoff. The bore is very good with strong rifling. The action is excellent.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 24 inches.
