BEAUTIFUL CONDITION SELDOM SEEN WINCHESTER M-1883 (3RD MODEL) .45-70 HOTCHKISS MUSKET, #82XXX, MADE 1895.
Description: BEAUTIFUL CONDITION SELDOM SEEN WINCHESTER MODEL 1883 (THIRD MODEL) .45-70 HOTCHKISS BOLT ACTION MUSKET, #82XXX, MADE 1895. This was the last iteration of the bolt action Hotchkiss line. The Third Model is easily distinguishable from the first and second models by its two-piece stock with exposed receiver. Third Models don't seem to show up as frequently as the previous models and it is known that many of these were shipped overseas on foreign contracts (China bought 15,000 M-1883 muskets). This example has the "turned down bolt" featured on some of the late production arms while the earlier production has the straight-out bolt handle. I called the Cody Museum and received a faxed call-in sheet indicating that this was simply listed in the records as a Musket that was received in the warehouse March 6, 1895 but not shipped from the warehouse until January 5, 1915! So this one sat in Winchester's warehouse for ten (10) years before being shipped! It does have a small two digit number stamped on the top of the butt plate which I assume was a rack or issue number, so it must have been part of a military, police, prison etc. arsenal. Pretty interesting, as by 1915 Europe was embroiled in World War I using the most modern smokeless powder Enfields, Mausers etc. here in the U.S. we were armed with various .30-06 rifles and machine guns! So, who would be buying .45-70 Hotchkiss muskets??? It would seem that by this date, state militias or even foreign countries on a budget could have bought surplus Krags, which were effective battle rifles firing a smokeless cartridge. So, who would buy a Hotchkiss .45-70 Musket in 1915??? I suppose that's what makes arms collecting so fascinating! Anyway, this example shows fine receiver case colors that are a more vivid on the right side and fading a little on the forward portion of the left side. Even the upper tang shows good color along with the correct "MODEL 1883" marking. Patent markings are on the lower tang. Light case colors are also on the bottom of the receiver by the serial number. Excellent stock and forend showing almost no handling marks and tight wood to metal fit. Fine deep blue on the 28" barrel. Correct military style rear ladder sight with slide intact. Tight action and minty bright bore. Needs only the cleaning rod which I believe is the same as used on the Trapdoor Springfields. These don't show up very often and this is a nice one!
