Description:
The United States Navy purchased 999 Second Model Rifles in 1880 and 1881 with 28.75 inches barrels chambered in 45-70 Govt. caliber. Overall gun is a grey color with good markings. Original sights. Full length musket style stocks in good condition. Cleaned at one time and has a few minor cracks around the bolt. Fine functioning action. This is a U.S. marked musket. Barrel is martially marked with proofmarks “V / P / eagle head” at left breech. Directly above the proofs are the Navy markings that show the “US” and the anchor motif. Serial #5259 is visible on left lip of receiver along with sub-inspector stampings of “H. N.” on barrel, bolt, and bolt stems. Cleaning rod with the slotted tip is under the barrel. A fairly scarce gun.
