Winchester Hotchkiss Carbine 1st Model
with State Militia Unit Markin
Description: Serial #11947, .45-70, 24” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome carbine that has approximately 80-85% of the original blue finish that has blended smoothly with a gray-brown freckled patina on the balance, including some fading at the muzzle. The bolt has thin freckling over most of the armory bright finish along the body with dark plum-brown on the handle and quite a bit of original blue on the cocking-piece. The walnut stock has no cracks or breaks at the wrist, unlike most other 1st Model examples, but there is a with-the-grain crack on the left side of the forend tip. There are some minor handling marks and small bruises scattered about the wood, and a large, unknown State Militia unit stamp on the heel of the butt on the right side: “CO. D”; as well as a rack number on the comb: “22D”. The saddle ring loop is still present and the carbine rates fine condition overall. These are very difficult to find with undamaged wrists, and this example has neat militia markings as well.
