#4937 Winchester 1886 OBFMCB 45/70, 36XXX range (1889
Description: #4937 Winchester 1886 OBFMCB 45/70, 36XXX range (1889), Ex.Fine-Excellent bore and action (about a 9+ on a scale of 10) with no bad spots except for having some light black powder residue in the grooves. Decent wood with no nasty slivers or serious dings but does have scuffing and minor dings mainly on the buttstock, much of which should steam out and clean up quite a bit with some time and effort, otherwise having a fine tight fit to the metal. VG crisp-edged metal and just a thin mottled grey-grown patina on the frame and 95% coverage of a 95% density blue on the barrel with the magazine being about 95% coverage and 70% density. Open front sight and low semi-buckhorn rear. This handsome old Winchester looks to have had VERY decent care in its 127 years of life and is WELL above the “average” 1886 that can be found in all but the better high-end gun shows. A nice gun with a great bore in a very popular caliber. Okay….so much for the “used car salesmans hype”. In MY opinion, this really nice looking gun has either had some really well done cosmetic upgrading by fogging on barrel and mag blue, or the barrel might have even been replaced by a better one. There just seems (to me) to have way TOO much barrel and mag finish when compared to the browned out frame case color and minor pitting on the forearm nose cap. Therefore, one should probably value this rifle MAINLY for its shooting possibilities and antique nostalga value and apply less importance to the high-end collector value. Still, all-in-all it is a NICE rifle. $3250 SOLD Antique: Yes |
