VERY EARLY 1894 .38-55 OCTAGON RIFLE, #5XXX, MADE 1895.
Description: VERY EARLY 1894 .38-55 OCTAGON RIFLE, #5XXX, MADE 1895. Serial numbers in 1894 only went up to 1674 after which production began in 1895. I would assume this one was made during the first FULL year of manufacture before the smokeless .30 WCF was even introduced. This one shows uncleaned fine lightly thinning and aged blue on the barrel and magazine that is mixing with some brown. Sharp markings and fitted with a buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and Winchester small blade front sight. the receiver is a very aged blue mixing heavily with brown and some gray (but not silvered as usually encountered on these early '94s). There is good blue in the protected areas, loading gate and bolt. Stock shows light handling only and appears to have a small chip put back in the left upper tang/receiver juncture- minor and what appears to be a "saddle wear" spot opposite on the right side. All with tight wood to metal fit. Fine forend. Tight action with solid half-cock safety on the hammer. Bore is surprisingly fine for such an early black powder rifle showing good rifling all the way through and any scattered corrosion surface and fairly minor- all much better than one would expect. Nice example from the first months of 1894 production! SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .38-55 Winchester Manufacturer: WINCHESTER Model: 1894 OCT. RIFLE Serial Number: 5XXX Barrel Length: 26" OCT. Condition: FINE Bore Condition: FINE |
