Description: 1876 .50-95 EXPRESS SPECIAL ORDER FACTORY SHORT RIFLE WITH LETTER. This rifle with serial number 31XXX has a factory letter that states: Rifle, Caliber: Express, Barrel type: Round; Barrel length: 22 inches; Trigger: Plain; 1/2 Magazine, Shotgun Butt, Received in the warehouse February 21, 1883; Shipped from the warehouse on March 3, 1883. Every thing checks out except this one now has a crescent butt plate. Whether it was replaced by the factory or someone else is unknown, but the wood coloration matches nicely with the forend. This rifle retains the all important dust cover which is marked "Winchester Express" over "50 CAL. 95 GRS." The rear ladder sight with slide intact is marked "1876" and the front sight is the standard Winchester blade. the forearm is the correct 8 3/8" length or 1 inch shorter than standard, as used on short rifles. The metal is mainly gray/brown with some very aged blue mixing on the receiver side plates and protected areas. There is some scattered light pitting on the receiver top and dust cover as well as some deeper pitting on parts of the lever that is old and blends well. Barrel markings are partially visible, but weak. Wood is fine. Bore is fairly bright. Fine mechanically.
