Antique 1873 Winchester. Octagon Barrel. 38-40 Caliber. Good Strong Bore. Good Traces of Blue. Excellent Mechanics..
Description:
SOLD....Antique 1873 Winchester rifle.. Nice 1873 Winchester with the standard 24” octagon barrel in the great shooting 38-40 caliber.. S/N 366158 and made in 1890. The bore is good with strong rifling with some common mild black powder roughness as to be expected .. No big craters and no rings or bulges. The mechanics are excellent.. Feeds, fires and ejects perfectly with no issues or hang ups. Both hammer notches are perfect and positive. Very smooth action with no forward hammer creep when you close the lever.. The gun over all is a nice and smooth medium plumb brown patina and never cleaned on or messed with.. There is traces of blue in the protected areas on both sides of the receiver around the side plates.. A little more on the left side than the right as you can see in the photos. Also at the rear of the receiver all around the hammer and the top around the dust cover rail.. Some nice deeper blue remains on the lower tang where protected by the lever with some untouched surface crud and dried grease as you can see. There is no pitting on the gun and the mag tube is still perfectly tight in the dove tail and retaining ring.. No looseness or wobbles and no dents.. Still retains the original dust cover that is still tight and opens with the lever throw. Not all loose and wobbly like most guns in this condition are. Just does not quite have that nice magnetic feel when you close it like when it was new but still much tighter than most on low to no finish guns.. Has the original sights with the front sight being the globe style but it is missing the round globe portion. The center post is still in place and secure and still flips up and down with good spring pressure. Has a very nice and positive sighting picture even without the globe section. If this sight was complete it would be a $400 sight but it is what it is now.!! Excellent markings throughout.. The wood is very solid with no splits or cracks.. The butt stock still fits full and proud to the sides of the receiver, the upper portion of the butt plate and the lower tang.. It fits perfectly even with the metal at the upper tang, the mid section of the butt plate and at the bottom toe of the butt stock were these normally show a lot of wear or chipped out.. Never sanded on, cleaned or messed with.. Just shows honest use a couple very minor handling mars.. Looks like some scattered black paint on the steel butt plate ?? The forearm fits tight, no splits or cracks and just fits even with the metal at the end cap and slightly proud to the sides of the receiver.. Nothing is undersized but it does show some very old and very light checkering on the left side at the front, at the rear and the middle.. Some ole cowboys folk art or who knows?? Not a bad job, but not factory work but better than I could do !!! Other than that, it just shows a couple very minor handling mars.. Just nice, tight and solid wood on this ole 73.. I can send close up photos of the light checkering to anyone who is interested because it does not show up enough in my photos.. Some of the screw heads show some turning but nothing burred up bad. Some show no tool marks at all and all of them are very serviceable. Nothing outstanding here but better than the rough dirt brown ones that show a LOT of wear and tear and pretty much reduced to being wall hangers.. This is a solid and very shootable ole 73 that is still kick'in with a little finish here and there.. Getting harder to find these large caliber 73's at reasonable prices anymore !!! Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. $50 insured shipping.
