Antique 1887 Vintage Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine in .44-40 Caliber SOLD
Description:
This 1887-production Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine shows a lot of original patina and has no doubt witnessed a lot of history. Chambered in .44-40, this Model 1873 came from the factory with blued finish, a 20" inch barrel, a receiver-mounted "saddle ring" sling mount, and a American Walnut stock set. These Saddle Ring Carbines were certainly one of the most popular weapons of the time, allowing the owner to carry a compact lever-action repeating carbine in the same .44-40 caliber as their sidearm, typically a Colt Single Action Army. Since it's introduction the Winchester Model 1873 has become one of the most iconic and recognizable firearms in American history. This particular example is all-original and un-molested except for the end of the barrel, where a 1/4" inch has been removed and the muzzle has been re-crowned. This was likely done a very long time ago in an attempt to remove an imperfection or worn spot in the rifling right at the muzzle. This is pretty common in these 1873's as the easiest way to clean them was to run a cleaning rod down the barrel from the muzzle end, and repeated cleanings with a steel cleaning rod would damage the rifling at the muzzle. The original factory blue finish has worn and aged to a brown patina on this Winchester, which is consistent on all of the metal parts. The bore in this 1873 SRC is actually quite good with lots of rifling still intact. There is pitting in the bore but it appears to be minor with no bad spots. We have no doubt that it would still shoot accurately if the new owner so chooses. The original smooth Walnut stock set shows a lot of handling marks, wear, some cracks, and scratches consistent with the rest of the gun. There is a crack in the buttstock just below the comb but it appears to be stable and tight. It appears that this crack and the cracks in the forearm have already been repaired as we could not get any of them to move or open up despite torquing and twisting them. All of the original stock hardware is still in place and in good condition, including the front barrel band and buttplate with a working brass trap for a cleaning rod. The action on this WInchester is in perfect working order. The action locks up and unlocks properly and the brass shell lifter functions perfectly. The hammer still has both the half-cock and full-cock notches and the trigger breaks nicely with a light pull. If you have been looking for an antique Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine in .44-40 for your collection that would be at home both displayed on your wall or in your safe, this 1887 production model would be a great choice. There is no telling where this Winchester has been, who owned it, or what history it was part of. As an antique this Winchester can be shipped directly to the buyer's home.
