EARLY 1873 2ND MODEL, .38-40 OCTAGON BARREL WITH SHOTGUN BUTT, #78XXX, MADE 1881
Description: SCARCE EARLY 1873 2ND MODEL, .38-40 OCTAGON BARREL WITH SHOTGUN BUTT, #78XXX, MADE 1881. These 2nd Model 1873s have interesting features. Almost all of the .38-40s had shotgun butts with smooth steel butt plates as standard. They also had carbine receivers that were used for rifles and have two small filler screws in the left side of the receiver where the saddle ring U-Shaped staple would have gone. This is a fine example that retains fine blue on the receiver that has aged to a most attractive plum with deeper blue around the side plates and protected areas as well as the loading gate. The barrel shows fine blue overall with only light age. Similarly, the magazine tube shows good blue mixing plum like the receiver. Excellent stock and forearm with tight wood to metal fit and shows only very light handling. Original dust cover intact on correct rail held with screws, uncleaned brass lifter is marked .38 CAL, exc. markings, buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar and Winchester blade front sight. Smooth, tight action, strong safety half-cock, with fine bore that is a little dark with good rifling throughout and light scattered surface corrosion. A particularly attractive 144 year old 1873 with lots of finish.
