Description:
EARLY 1873 3RD MODEL ROUND BARREL RIFLE, .44-40 CALIBER WITH SPECIAL ORDER SET TRIGGER, #128XXX, MADE 1883. Nice frontier era example that came out of here in Montana. Mostly an uncleaned gray/brown receiver, barrel and magazine with some blue in protected areas. Dust cover intact and fitted with a Rocky Mountain blade front sight with folding leaf rear sight (middle leaf broken). Excellent markings on barrel and upper tang. Correctly NOT caliber marked as the Model 1873 was only caliber marked after the .38-40 and later .32-20 calibers were introduced after this one was made. Generally excellent stock and forend with only some minor handling marks and very tight wood to metal fit. Butt plate has the correct brass sliding trap door for cleaning rods- none come with this rifle. Tight action and half cock notch holds well. The set trigger functions correctly and retains the small adjustment screw. Bore is surprisingly good for such an early black powder rifle that shows fine rifling all the way through, but is a little dark and lightly frosted, but not heavily pitted or damaged in any way- much better than usually encountered on 1883 vintage 1873s. 139 year old 1873 with nice, un-messed with appearance.
