HIGH CONDITION VERY EARLY ANTIQUE 1892 .38-40 OCTAGON RIFLE, #22XXX, MADE 1893
Description: HIGH CONDITION VERY EARLY ANTIQUE 1892 .38-40 OCTAGON RIFLE, #22XXX, MADE 1893. This fine rifle retains nearly all the deep blue on the barrel and magazine. The receiver shows bright original blue on both sides and loading gate with only light thinning of the blue on the receiver bottom, top/bolt. and very lightly on the left side. The stock and forearm display the classic reddish/brown color of early '92s and both are excellent with one small chip out of the top receiver/tang juncture on the left side. Original buckhorn rear sight with small Winchester blade front sight. Still shows some light case color on the upper portion of the lever sides. Action is tight and bore is excellent and bright. I noticed this rifle has a Winchester proof mark on the receiver ring and rear of the barrel which was not applied until about 1905. I suspected this rifle had been returned to the factory at some time after that, so I got a call-in sheet from the Cody Museum on this one (included) and I was correct in my thinking. Everything lettered and a notation in the records indicated that this rifle was returned/repaired on May 03, 1915. Whenever a rifle was returned to Winchester, it was proofed and proof marked before being returned- even if it was returned just for a cleaning. This is an outstanding example and especially so for such and early 128 year old Winchester! SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .38-40 Winchester Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1892 OCT. RIFLE Serial Number: 22XXX Barrel Length: 24" OCTAGON Condition: EXCELLENT Bore Condition: EXCELLENT |
