Single Shot Rifle Made in 1891 Chambered in .25-20 SS
Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1885 Low Wall Rifle with an Extra Length 36” 2 Weight Octagonal Barrel in .25-20 Single Shot (SS), made in 1891 in New Haven, Connecticut. The barrel length and the chambering make this one very scarce as 36 inches was the longest barrel length Winchester offered. .25-20 Single Shot was conceived in 1882 by J. Francis Rabbeth and was adopted as a small bore cartridge for target and varminting applications. Being an early centerfire cartridge, it was reloadable and possibly one of the first cartridges to be “wildcatted”.
Ironically, this was Winchester’s first single shot rifle, the company having been founded on its winning lever action repeater design. John Moses Browning, the famed gun designer who forever changed the firearms landscape, began his career with this rifle in the 19th Century before dominating the world scene in the 20th Century. These were good, sturdy actions that handled everything from .22 Rimfire to the big bore cartridges like 45-90 of their day.
This long barrel would have helped take advantage of the relatively slow burn time of black powder to squeeze every bit of velocity out of the cartridge. The top of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.”. The rear of the barrel is marked “25-20 S.S.”.
The overall condition is fine. The original blue finish is nearly perfect under the forearm, while the rest of the barrel bears 40%, and the receiver about 60% blue finish. Case colors are still visible though slightly silvered. The markings are clear. The walnut stock is in great shape, showing honest wear. The bore is clean with nice rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a very nice and scarce, if not rare, example of the venerable Winchester 1885!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 36 inch octagon.
Caliber: .25-20 Single Shot
Overall condition as seen in photos.
