SPECIAL ORDER 1873 1/2OB1/2M, CASE HARDENED, .38-40, LETTER, C.1885
Description: UNUSUAL SPECIAL ORDER 1873 RIFLE WITH ½ OCTAGON BARREL, ½ MAGAZINE, CASE HARDENED FINISH, FANCIER THAN STANDARD WALNUT, .38-40 CALIBER, WITH FACTORY LETTER, SHIPPED 1885. According to the Winchester Handbook by George Madis, out of over 720,000 1873s manufactured, only 801 had part-round barrels and only 2,669 had magazines shorter than standard. No number is given for case hardened receivers, but the amount produced was also very small making this example extremely unusual and rare. This is a really nice unfooled with rifle that still retains excellent screw heads, tight wood to metal fit, original sights and dust cover etc. The letter doesn’t mention higher grade wood, but this one has typical upgraded walnut that was typically selected for special order rifles. The case harden finish now has an attractive uncleaned aged dark color with some mottling, fine blue on the loading gate, the barrel has also aged to a soft slightly-plum brown with excellent markings and a fine+ bore, mellow unpolished brass lifter correctly engraved “38 CAL.” Tight action. Nice early special order ’73!
