Winchester 1873 with 28 Inch Barrel in 38-40
Description: This Winchester rifle is an example of the gun that won the West, the Winchester model 1873. It has solid walnut stock and forend with no visible cracks. The 28 inch barrel, 4 inches longer than standard, makes up a small percentage of Model 1873s produced. The rifle is chambered in 38 WCF (38-40) , which is an uncommon centerfire cartridge available in this model. Made in 1887, SN 233357, it is in so, so condition for being 137 years old. The gun did not have wonderful care, as there are handling marks in the wood, although the stampings are mostly clear and legible. The blue of the barrel has drifted to a brown patina, the magazine tube retaining a little more blue. The receiver and lever have hardly any amount of case color left, not too much on the hammer, butt plate, and forend cap. The action is missing some parts, but those should be easily located and replaced by any good Winchester man. The gun will half cock, full cock and dry fire. The bore of the long barrel is not very good, quite dull with soft riflings. The rear sight is the early type. There is no dust cover. The butt plate does have the cleaning rod window. I was going to begin a full restoration of this gun, but I have decided I have too many projects to pursue that. If you have been looking for the right '73 to collect, for investment, or for that nostalgic hunt, but want add a less than deluxe model to restore, then look no further.
