Winchester 1895 National Guard of Colorado .30-40 1897
Description: This is an exceptionally rare 1895 Winchester carbine marked "NATIONAL GUARD OF COLORADO" on the right side of the receiver. Marked 2 E 11 on the receiver ring (2nd Colorado NG regiment, Company E, 11th rifle). The rifle has U.S. Inspector KSM marks on the barrel, bolt, and lower left side of the lever, and letters as a musket made in 1897. 1895 Winchester NATIONAL GUARD OF COLORDO History: The U.S. Army ordered 10,000 Winchester 1895 Muskets for the Spanish-American War. but the war ended before they arrived at the front and the rifles where returned to Winchester. Many parts were marked "K.S.M. by ordnance inspector Kelly S. Morse. Approximately 400 of the original U.S. ordered rifles were later rebuilt and roll marked "National Guard of Colorado and issued to the state guard in 1899. Colorado rifles have unit markings on the receiver ring instead of the "U.S." found on Army muskets. These rifles were used by the Colorado National Guard in a number of mine strikes and civil disturbances including the Cripple/Telluride/Trinidad strikes of 1903-04.
