WINCHESTER FIRST MODE OCTAGON RIFLE WITH FACTORY SADDLE RING, #20XXX, MADE 1876.
Description: ONE OF THE MOST UNUSUAL AND RARE 1873s I'VE SEEN IS THIS .44-40 FIRST MODE OCTAGON RIFLE WITH FACTORY SADDLE RING, #20XXX, MADE 1876. According to the factory records, this one was received in the warehouse as a CARBINE on July 26, 1876. Apparently it sat in the warehouse for two years until October 26, 1878 when it was changed to a 24" octagon rifle and shipped the same day! So, it still has the saddle ring from when it was a carbine, but now is a rifle. I'm not sure how many other first model 1873s might fit this configuration, but there can't be many...if any! The barrel and full magazine on this rifle retain some very aged blue that has heavily mixed with plum/brown. The rear buckhorn sight with elevator bar appears to be original and it is matched with a low blade front sight. All markings on the barrel are fine and sharp. The receiver shows light to moderate pitting overall that is old and blends with only the upper tang showing some cleaning. The dust over shows some marring/cross hatching in the oval thumb print area, but fits and operates well. The forend and butt stock show normal light handling marks with good wood to metal fit. Surprisingly, the bore is about excellent. Obviously, the receiver got rusty for a protracted period of time before being wiped off and leaving the resultant pitting. Retains the correct original early style lever and lever catch and still has some good blue on the loading gate. This one came out of Arizona. A First Model 1873 Winchester oddity for sure!
