Winchester M-1886, Deluxe, .45-70, 1/2 Octagonal, Short Mag. Antique, 1896 with Cody Letter
Description: *** PRICE REDUCED *** This M-1886 Winchester Rifle has many special-order options. It has a 22-inch, half-octagonal barrel chambered in .45-70 caliber. It has a short magazine holding 4 cartridges. A Lyman 66LA receiver sight is mounted. It has a shotgun butt, XXX Walnut stock, a checkered pistol grip and checkered forearm. A Winchester / Cody letter is included. The rifle was shipped Nov. 11, 1896 and returned for repair on Feb. 24, 1898. Even after 128 years It remains a spectacular rifle, the bore is excellent, bright, and shiny. It looks new, and it is not sleeved. The action is very smooth and tight, showing little to no erosion or marks on the bolt face. The bore and bolt face lead me to believe it has been used very little. This condition is unheard of in weapons of the black powder era. The metal surfaces have been re-finished at some time. The markings are slightly faded, the barrel corners are slightly rounded, and the screw holes are slightly dished. The wood is in excellent condition and may be oil finished. The mechanical condition is so good that if I were keeping it, I would send it to Turnbull for cosmetic restoration. It would be money well spent. Just to put this value in perspective, the 44th Edition of the Blue Book of Gun Values lists this rifle in 90% condition at $50,000. As I think of it, I may still do this, we'll see. This is a rare and beautiful M1886 for your Winchester collection. .45-70 caliber with a 22 inch barrel. Serial Number: 110839. ANTIQUE, No FFL or C&R Required.
