CUSTER BATTLE GUN
Winchester Model 1866 Carbine
Serial Number 17720
Up for sale is an extremely rare, Winchester Model 1866
Carbine, manufactured in 1868, and documented as an Indian gun
most likely used by the Sioux or Cheyennes. “Many of the
weapons taken from the Cheyennes and Sioux in 1877, are
believed to have gone into the United States Cartridge Company
collection, which was exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution for a
long period. It has been dispersed quite recently, and firearms
traced to it or to some other Government collection have a positive
claim to usage in the Battle.” (p.43 Firearms in the Custer Battle,
published 1953).
This 1866 Carbine, serial #17720, is shown in two books,
Firearms in the Custer Battle, by John E. Parsons and John S. du
Mont, and Custer Battle Guns, by John S. du Mont, published 1977
(1 of 250 published). Both books go with the purchase of the 1866
Carbine. Both books are signed.
This 1866 Carbine is decorated with brass tacks in a way
similar to Sitting Bull’s 1866 Carbine, as shown on page 59,
Custer Battle Guns.
The 1866 Carbine is in very good condition. Mechanically it
is very good and the bore is very good showing strong land and
grooves with only minor pitting from black powder usage. There
is a dovetail cut in lever barrel behind the front band and a bolt
holding the lever to the frame that is not original.
This Winchester 1866 is a superb piece of history,
documented in two book about Custer’s Battle Guns.
