Winchester Model 1876 .45-75 – 98%, RARE SET TRIGGER, CIRCA 1879! vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Winchester, Year 1879, .45-75, 9lb 13oz, LOP 13 1/8" Serial Number: 8177 What a great piece of history we have here in this Winchester Model 1876 rifle chambered in the original .45-75 cartridge. Essentially an enlarged version of the Model of 1873 designed to handle larger cartridges for heavier game and longer-range shooting, the Model 1876’s standard configuration for the first several years was a 28” round barrel and chambered in .45-75 only, hence no caliber markings on the gun. The Model 1876 was relatively short-lived, with the last production date in 1886, and 63,000 rifles total production. The Model 1876 Second Model shown here, sn8177 built in 1879, IS A RARE SPECIAL-ORDER RIFLE WITH A SPECIAL ORDER 28” FULL OCTAGON BARREL (2/3rds of the rifles were ordered this way), AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, A FACTORY SET TRIGGER, A FEATURE ONLY FOUND ON 14 OF THE 63,000 RIFLES SHIPPED! VERY RARE INDEED! The Cody Firearms Museum information sheet included with the sale clearly shows that this rifle left the factory with this rare set trigger feature. This gorgeous Winchester Model 1876 has been carefully restored to historically correct finishes. Whoever was responsible for this outstanding restoration was very careful to not disturb the stampings, hard edges on the octagon barrel, or wood-to-metal fit on this gun. There is no pitting or scratches remaining, the strike marks on the barrel are a perfect replication of Winchester’s methods, the rust blue on the barrel, magazine tube, and action is deep and lustrous, the loading gate and trigger are charcoal blued, and the hammer, lever, and buttplate are bone and charcoal case colored. The wood appears to have the original factory finish and patina you would expect from a well-cared-for Winchester. The lack of any pitting or scratches, and the clear, sharp barrel stampings and serial numbers indicate that this rifle was in very high condition before the restoration. The screws are all excellent, the mechanics are fully functional and operate crisply, and the bore has strong rifling from muzzle to breach with scattered pitting throughout. There are no cracks or repairs to the wood and all parts appear to be original to the gun. You will see in the photos that the assembly numbers match on the rifle’s lower tang, trough in the top of the stock, and on the crescent buttplate. The sights are original and proper for this Model 1876. Rare set trigger, special order octagon barrel, all factory original parts, restored to historical perfection, fully functional…all the features to make this Winchester a very collectible, investment grade Model 1876 that will show well in any collection. During normal times ammunition is readily available for those that want to shoot this piece of history. I sure would! We bought this rifle “right” and it is priced to sell. Thanks for looking.
