Winchester Model 1876 Rifle
Description:
On Hold, Sale Pending! This is a nice example of the Winchester 1876 which was also known as the "Centennial Model" after it was introduced at the Philadelphia Exposition which celebrated America's 100th Birthday with large displays of innovation and technology. Like its smaller brother the Model 1873, the 1876 was designed with central priming so it could be reloaded on the frontier using a simple hand tool and bullet mold. As rimfire ammunition was not reloadable, these new rifles with center-fire ammunition effectively made muzzleloaders (which had been around since the 16th century) completely obsolete. This one still retains lots of original blue and just shows honest wear and use that remains 100% original down to the screws. It's never been touched up, had the wood refinished...the surfaces on this rifle are still at their factory levels minus wear from its period of use. Configuration is a standard sporting rifle with 28" Octagonn Barrel, Full Magazine, and Crescent Rifle Buttplate with "1876" marked Ladder sight, standard front sight with German silver blade. Caliber is 45-60. Overall Condition, this rifle grades to NRA Antique Fine Condition. The receiver has 65% original blue that is stronger towards the stock and thinning out a bit at the front from where it was carried by a hunter who was right-handed. There is about 70% fire blue on the loading port and a good bit of thinning blue remaining on the top of the bolt and even the dust cover. The hammer has 35% good discernable case colors remaining while the colors on the lever have silvered out and are toning to brown. The brass loading block has a nice clear "45-60" and the top flat of the octagon barrel reads "45-60 W.C.F." The barrel has 75% original blue which is medium to light with a nice clear Winchester address forward of the rear sight. The magazine tube retains 50% original blue. The wood is in Very Good Condition Overall showing a good bit of handling wear...or should I re-phrase that as "character" from its period of use. There are nicks and scratches and some abrasions...I'm just glad nobody ever tried to refinish it because its like art to me. It does a good job telling the story of how it was used as you can see where the owners hands wore the original varnish off the forend and the wrist while the stock from the comb back still has most of its original varnish. The action is nice and the bore was well-looked as its Fine Overall with nice lands and grooves, no major pits, bad spots, no rings or bulges. Just a good solid example of an 1876 Rifle with a desirable octagon barrel in a good caliber. Antique, Pre-1898.
