EARLY WIN. 1885 HIGHWALL SINGLE SHOT OCTAGON RIFLE, SCARCE CAL .38-56 WCF
Description: EARLY 1885 HIGHWALL SINGLE SHOT OCTAGON RIFLE, SCARCE CALIBER .38-56 WCF, MADE 1889, only 610 Highwalls were made in this chambering, actually a better caliber than most people think as it is the .45-70 case necked down to .38 and holds a full 56 grains of black powder as opposed to the .38-55 which is a straight .30WCF case holding only about 45 grains of powder. This one was obviously used for target shooting as it has a long range sporting tang sight with a matching windage adjustable globe with spirit level front sight (a slot blank is in the rear barrel dovetail), bore is surprisingly fine and should scrub out near exc. with strong rifling and the usual light corrosion ahead of the chamber, mottled & cloudy gray receive, thinned and aged barrel blue, exc. nicely figured walnut butt stock and forend with correct ebony wedge in the forend tip, has period sling eye swivel studs, as the barrel measures 28" (No. 3 weight) I called Cody for a serial number check and as I suspected this rifle was shipped as a .38-56 with 30" barrel, so somewhere along the line the barrel was shortened 2" and correctly crowned- probably the rifling was worn at the muzzle from improper cleaning- very common- so it was shortened, tight action and overall very attractive with great sights. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1885 Highwall Single Shot Serial Number: 40XXX Caliber Info: .38-56 WCF Condition: fine Barrels: 28" oct. |
