Winchester Model 54 22 Hornet
Description:
For sale is a Winchester Model 54 22 Hornet. Make sure to see all the pictures of the gun. I originally bought the gun because it was the best conditioned orginal Model 54 that I had ever come across in a 22 Hornet. I have always thought that they were superb guns. So did Layne Simpson. Several years ago he wrote a lengthy article on the 22 Hornet, and said that out of about 15 of them that he owned, the best shooting one was a Model 54 Winchester. Any rifle that was made in the midst of The Great Depression had to be the best. If not, the company would not survive.
Also, I want to be totally honest with a potentional buyer. There were two issues with the gun. The first one one was that the gun had been dropped and there was a bad crack that ran through the wrist of the gun. I sent it to a gentlemen whom I considered the best stockworker in the country. He told me he could repair it. And, I let him do exactly that. He got the stock back together in the "Support Cradle" he uses, and glued the crack and then very carefully compressed the stock back together again. When he had sat a few days, he then drilled a tiny long hole through the affected area, and then inserted a thin threaded rod in the hole. The rod didn't even show when he finished. He actually plugged the inside of the stock as well.
He had told me that he would do the best that he could with the "Spot Finishing" and recheckering. You can see some darker streaks (Lines) that show up on one side of the affected area. He refinished the stock with his "Winchester Blend" formula, and then recut the checkering over the affected area there. The rest of the stock had all of it's orignial finish. There had been a couple of "pressure dents" put in the stock over the years, and he did his best to steam those out and fix them.
The second item is that someone put a long scope base on the front bridge. This extends out over the front barrel, and when they did this, they drilled one hole for a screw at the rear of the barrel. Now, If I were keeping the gun, I was to simply take that base off, and install a regular base on the front bridge, and then put a filler screw in the one hole. Lastly, I was simply going to put a Cross-Dovetail Block in the rear sight boss, and then scope the gun. But, you wouldn't even have to take that long scope base off. You could simply put the cross-dovetail block in the rear sight boss and scope it.
Take a look at all the pictures. We ran out of pictures with the listing, but the bore is shiny and bright and the rifling looks fine.
One of the first areas of wear on the Model 54's was the floorplate and trigger guard, where the bluing would come off. There are some minor marks on the floorplate, and the trigger guard has just about all of its blue, as does the floorplate.
The numbers-matching bolt is bright and shiny. The 48W rear sight is totally original, and the base and slide are numbers matching. The front sight hood is original and correct. There is a little blue wear on the edges of the butt plate. The bolt has just a little blue wear on the knob. Again, look at all the pictures that have been taken.
Other than the stock issue and the front block, the gun is totally original, and I would say about 98% overall.
