1894 SPECIAL ORDER TAKEDOWN SHORT RIFLE, 20" HALF OCT., HALF MAGAZINE, .30 WCF, #161XXX MADE 1902, LETTER
Description: ONE OF THE MOST UNUSUAL AND RARE MODEL 1894s I'VE OFFERED IS THIS SPECIAL ORDER TAKEDOWN SHORT RIFLE WITH 20" HALF OCTAGON BARREL, HALF MAGAZINE, .30 WCF, #161XXX MADE 1902. This rifle comes with two letters from William L. Porter, Research Associate at the Winchester Arms Museum- one dated July 29, 1985 and the other dated November 11, 1985. In both letters he states: "I have personally examined all the model 1894 records from serial number 1 through serial number 161XXX... I could find no other guns with the exact specifications as serial number 161XXX. These specifications were, rifle, .30 caliber, 20 inch 1/2 octagon barrel, plain trigger, takedown, 1/2 magazine." He does not state whether numbers higher than this one might have the same features, but my guess is that none to very few were made like this. Short rifles are not common; takedown short rifles really uncommon; 20" half octagon rifles are seldom seen and 1/2" magazines on 20" rifles are also almost never seen. All put together make this a possibly unique 1894. Obviously, this rifle was special ordered by an individual who needed an easily transportable, lightweight rifle for a lot of hunting, and this rifle shows it has a lot of history in it! The wood is basically sound with a repaired crack in the left side of the forend and one coming forward from the bottom portion of the butt plate for a couple of inches, but is intact. Aside from that the wood shows handling, but no abuse. The barrel and mag tube show aged and thinning blue. The barrel is fitted with a short blade front sight, two leaf express sight mated with a Lyman tang sight. The receiver is gray with some dings and if you look closely, possibly a repair to the upper tang at the hammer junction. Takedown is tight, action is fine and the bore is a bit frosty, but not heavily pitted. Like almost all Trapper Carbines and Rifles, what this rifle lacks in finish, it makes up for in unusual rarity! Still has an attractive and unusual appearance. I don't expect to see another like it. Wonderful documentation! This is one you add to your collection because it is either the first 1894 Winchester produced like this or one of the only ones produced like this!
