A TRULY ONE-OF-A-KIND MODEL 1894 SADDLE RING CARBINE! .38-55, semi-dlx. Stainless Steel
Description: A TRULY ONE-OF-A-KIND MODEL 1894 SADDLE RING CARBINE! I'm not sure I've ever offered, much less seen, a unique 1894 of which there are no others identical; but here it is! This one is is chambered in .38-55 and has a plain pistol grip with late-style serrated steel shotgun butt stock. It also has a 2/3 magazine... now here's the kicker, IT HAS A STAINLESS STEEL BARREL MADE WITHOUT A REAR "SEAT" OR DOVETAIL for a rear sight. The serial number is 1038XXX which places it as manufactured in 1928. This is important as the stainless steel barrel option was only offered from about 1926-1931 and was rarely ordered. Any stainless steel barrel '94 is a rarity, but one made without a rear dovetail and placed on a pistol grip saddle ring carbine is pretty much unheard of. Add to that the .38-55 chambering at such a late date, and I'd think that unless someone ordered two identical carbines like this, it is a one-of-a-kind! This one has the correct factory proof marks on the receiver and barrel. The stainless steel barrels could not be blued, so they were "Japanned" finished (like a black paint). As this tended to scratch and peel off, usually owners of these simply steel-wooled off the remaining black finish. Such is the case with this example. There are faint scratch lines indicating this was done. The barrel has the correct late style "MODEL 94" and "-STAINLESS STEEL-" markings. The 2/3 length magazine tube retains fine blue and there is still some good blue on the barrel band. The receiver blue has mostly dulled and flaked to a brownish-gray with some aged blue more on the left side panel. Fine deep blue on the loading gate and lever . Possibly some cold blue was rubbed on at some point- easy to remove. The saddle ring is intact. Stock has the correct Winchester embossed pistol grip cap and has the “fluted” comb typical of stocks made in the late 1920s. Exc. stock and forend. Wood shows light handling only. The upper tang is fitted with a later unmarked Lyman or Marble tang sight in the factory holes. Appears the rear tang screw too long and is not pulling the lower/upper tangs tight as the upper tang appears raised slightly from the wood. All very minor. Tight action, strong safety half-cock and perfect bore.
