LATE MODEL 1873 .44-40 OCTAGON RIFLE, #588XXX, MADE 1904
Description: LATE MODEL 1873 .44-40 OCTAGON RIFLE, #588XXX, MADE 1904. Many of these post- approx.1895 manufactured 1873s were exported and show considerable use and abuse when found. Many were shipped to Mexico and points further south. This example retains good aged blue on the barrel, but has evidence of light rust mainly on the octagon edges that was wiped off leaving some shallow pin prick pitting that is very minor. This is also apparent mainly on the bottom of the mag tube with is brown with good aged blue on the sides and top. The receiver retains the dust cover and also shows some good blue on the side plates and protected areas that is mixing brown. Metal shows no evidence of cleaning or steel wooling. There is good blue on the loading gate. It has the original buckhorn rear sight matched with the original Winchester small blade front sight. The forend shows some dings to the bottom and the butt stock shows only normal handling with good wood to metal fit. Tight action with dark bore that shows good rifling all the way through with some scattered surface roughness. I’ve tried to hit on all the negatives, but this is actually a very attractive nearly 116 year old ’73 that looks like it may have spent some time in the tropics.
