Description:
Up for review is an interesting somewhat rare Winchester 92 rifle with a nicely descriptive note from George Madis. It came into being in the 1912 era and was commonly used by those who preferred a light easily carried short rifle in one of the pistol calibers. Many horseback cattlemen and trappers really appreciated the 92 model Winchester. This one happens to be in the 44 WCF caliber with an unusually short barrel. Most of these saddle ring carbines were produced with a 20 inch barrel but this one has an original 16 incher. The gun shows significant use but not much if any abuse as evidenced by the relatively good condition of its stock which was made of gumwood. This wood is soft and would readily show proof of misuse had it been part of this rifle's past. The bluing has with age and use been reduced to perhaps 50 % of its original and the receiver has lost much of its color as well due to both handling and aging. The barrel inscriptions are correct and the ladder sight is in very good condition. The bore in this gun is mint which is even more unusual for one of these short carbines of this vintage. The pictures and the letter describing the gun will no doubt be a better indicator of the rifle's condition and relative rarity than my description. Thanks much for taking a look. Jack
