Early 1942 WW2 Winchester M1 Garand 30-06 Caliber
** 1946 Raritan Arsenal Rebuild **
SOLD
Description: If you have been looking for a nice WW2 production M1 Garand made by Winchester for an investment and shooter here is an excellent choice. This Winchester-made M1 Garand is a 6-digit serial number 156218, making it's original date of manufacture sometime in the first few months of 1942. It certainly saw service during World War 2 likely in the U.S. Army or Marines, and likely was issued and used in the Korean War as well. After World War 2 ended this Winchester was returned to U.S. Military inventory and sent to Raritan Arsenal in Middlesex county New Jersey. Raritan Arsenal was in charge of rebuilding/servicing a number of M1 Garands to put back into active service and inventory before and during the Korean War. This Winchester was one of the early batches that the arsenal did post-WW2 in 1946. This M1 Garand was restocked and re-barreled, and many of the other parts that showed any finish wear, mechanical wear, or damage were replaced. The barrel that was swapped in is a Springfield barrel dated 8-46 for August of 1946. It is in excellent condition with no pitting or erosion visible, and gauged a "3" at the throat and "2.5" at the muzzle. The trigger group, op rod, and bolt were replaced with Springfield parts, as well as the sight parts, barrel bands, etc. This Garand appears to have been totally overhauled but not refinished (re-parkerized). The original parkerized finish on all the parts except for the gas port cylinder looks good overall, it has a nice even patina that shows some wear but nothing too bad. It looks like it saw service in the war but was not abused or left out in a field in the ETO or on a beach in the PTO for a week The gas port cylinder shows very little finish at all, which is to be expected or at least is common for a WW2 production part. The reason is the original factory parkerizing would not adhere to the metal used for this part. There are many stories of G.I.s during the war using black shoe polish or a dark colored paint to cover this part up to eliminate the shine it gave off. It was feared that the reflection off the gas cylinder could give away their position. The stock is an original American Walnut G.I. stock and is in good condition overall. It appears to be free from any cracks or repairs and is structurally sound. It shows lots of small dings, dents, and handling marks you would expect from a combat-used rifle. The handguards match the stock very well with all the wood having a nice dark uniform appearance. All of the stock set is nice and tight to the gun with no loose parts that rattle. The original inspector's cartouches and U.S. Ordnance Wheel cartouche have been sanded or worn off and are no longer visible except for the "P" on the face of the pistol grip, and the "RA" stamp from Raritan Arsenal on the bottom of the pistol grip. The buttplate is intact with a functional trap door, and it is nice and tight to the wood. This Winchester M1 Garand is a very nice example of one of the most important U.S. Military rifles of all time. General Patton said about the Garand "In my opinion, the M1 rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised". Every U.S. Military rifle collection should have at least one example of this rifle to be considered complete. This rifle comes with a Korean War era G.I. sling, and original 8-rd G.I. en-bloc clips are available at an additional cost. As mentioned previously, this Winchester will make a great investment as well as a shooter. With finish wear already showing from military use, firing this rifle at the range or on the farm will not diminish it's value.
