Indian Tacked Hide Wrapped Winchester 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine. Made in 1878. Real deal tacked Saddle Ring Carbine. Barrel has a dark gray patina with scattered pitting. Most of the forearm is hide wrapped. It was definitely done in the period of use judging by the age on the sinew stitching. It appears that the butt stock had the same wrapping on it, but it came off at some point. There is a clear line in the stock where you can see where the wrap was protecting the gun and wood from areas in the wrist. Butt stock has old tacks on both sides of the stock. The frame has unusual markings with a design stamped into the top part of the frame. The right hand side of the frame has a large “S.” The left hand side of the frame has two arrows that are crossed. We do not know the significance of either marking, but they are certainly neat. Very neat tacked and hide wrapped Winchester 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine.
